Boat Insurance in New Jersey
Boat Insurance in New Jersey
New Jersey's shoreline is home to some of the best boating in the country — from the protected waters of Barnegat Bay to the open ocean off the Long Beach Island coast. At Shore Agency and RFK Insurance, we've been insuring the people, homes, and businesses along these waterways for generations. Protecting your boat is a natural extension of that.
Whether you keep a runabout at a Toms River marina, run a center console out of Brielle, or cruise the Intracoastal on a trawler, we'll match you with the right coverage at a competitive rate — and make sure you understand exactly what you're buying.
What Does Boat Insurance Cover?
A standard boat insurance policy combines liability protection with physical damage coverage for your vessel. Here's what each part does
Bodily Injury
Liability
Covers medical expenses and legal costs if you injure another person while operating your boat. This applies whether the injury happens on the water, at a dock, or during launch and retrieval.
Property Damage Liability
Pays for damage your boat causes to other vessels, docks, piers, buoys, or waterfront property. Critical on busy waterways like Barnegat Bay where close-quarters maneuvering is common.
Collision
Coverage
Repairs or replaces your boat if it's damaged in a collision — with another boat, a dock, a submerged object, or even the bottom — regardless of who was at fault.
Comprehensive
Coverage
Covers non-collision losses: theft, fire, lightning, windstorm, hail, vandalism, and sinking. Also covers storm damage during haul-out and storage, which is important given NJ's hurricane season exposure.
Uninsured
Boaters
Protects you when the other boat operator has no insurance or insufficient coverage to pay for your injuries or boat damage. New Jersey's waterways have a high percentage of uninsured operators.
Medical
Payments
Covers reasonable medical expenses for you and your passengers after a boating accident, regardless of who was at fault. Often extends to water skiing and other towed activities.
Policies can also include coverage for personal property aboard (fishing gear, electronics, safety equipment), emergency towing and assistance, and fuel spill liability — which is increasingly important as environmental regulations tighten in NJ coastal waters.
Does Your Homeowners Policy Cover Your Boat?
Most homeowners policies provide only minimal coverage for boats — typically $1,000–$1,500 for theft of the boat itself, and no liability coverage on the water whatsoever. That gap matters the moment you leave the dock.
A standalone boat insurance policy fills that gap completely: on-water liability, physical damage to the hull and motor, and coverage that travels with you from your home slip to a rented marina two inlets over.
Classic & Vintage Boat Insurance
Own a restored classic Chris-Craft, a vintage wooden sailboat, or a collector's outboard? Standard boat insurance often undervalues classic vessels — paying out depreciated market value rather than what it actually cost to restore and maintain them.
We specialize in agreed value policies for classic and vintage boats: you and the insurer agree on the boat's value upfront, and that's exactly what you receive in the event of a total loss — no depreciation, no negotiation. It's the same approach we apply to our classic car clients, and it makes a significant difference for owners who've invested in preservation-quality restorations.
Ways to Lower Your Boat Insurance Premium
- Boater safety course discount: Completing a USCG-approved or state-recognized boating safety course typically reduces your premium by 5–15%. New Jersey recognizes courses from the Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, and online providers like BoatUS.
- Multi-policy discount: Bundle your boat policy with your home, auto, or umbrella coverage through Shore Agency or RFK Insurance for a meaningful reduction across all policies.
- Lay-up credit: If your boat is in dry storage from November through April, you can exclude on-water coverage during those months — this can reduce your annual premium by 10–20%.
- Safety equipment: VHF radio, GPS, fire extinguishers, and proper running lights can earn additional credits depending on the carrier.
- Claim-free history: A clean record on the water translates directly to lower rates over time.
Why NJ Boaters Choose RFK Insurance and the Shore Agency
You might think you want the cheapest boat insurance you can find — but cheap isn't everything. While most insurance products are similar in price, providers vary widely when it comes to building a policy that actually covers you when something goes wrong.
There's no one-size-fits-all policy on the water. Whether you're mooring at a Jersey Shore marina, cruising the Raritan Bay, or trailering your boat across the state, we'll build a policy around your specific needs — not a generic template
We Cover All New Jersey Waterways
Whether you're on the ocean, the bay, a river, or a lake, we insure New Jersey boaters across every type of waterway:
Jersey Shore & Coastal Waters: The Jersey Shore coastline from Sandy Hook down through Point Pleasant, Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, Absecon, Ocean City, Wildwood, and Cape May is home to some of the most active recreational boating in the Northeast. We insure everything from PWCs and fishing boats to cabin cruisers and sailboats operating in the Atlantic and along the Shore's barrier islands.
Barnegat Bay: One of New Jersey's most popular boating destinations, Barnegat Bay stretches 40 miles along the Ocean County Shore and is home to hundreds of marinas and boat launches in Toms River, Brick, Lavallette, Seaside Heights, Bay Head, and Barnegat Light. We cover boats based throughout the Bay.
Raritan Bay & Sandy Hook Bay: North Jersey boaters in Monmouth, Middlesex, and Union counties who launch from marinas in Keyport, Keansburg, South Amboy, and Atlantic Highlands depend on Raritan Bay for their season. We know this water and the coverage needs that come with it.
Navesink & Shrewsbury Rivers: Red Bank, Rumson, Sea Bright, and Fair Haven are home to some of Monmouth County's most active boating communities. We insure boats moored along the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers year-round.
Delaware River & Bay: Boaters in South Jersey and the Delaware Bay region — including Cape May, Maurice River, and Delaware Bay fishing boats — operate in conditions that require coverage built for open bay and river use. Shore Agency covers them.
Lake Hopatcong & North Jersey Lakes: North Jersey's largest lake is a major summer boating hub for Morris and Sussex County residents. We insure pontoons, fishing boats, and personal watercraft on Lake Hopatcong, Greenwood Lake, and other North Jersey recreational lakes.
Frequently Asked Questions About Boat Insurance in NJ
Is boat insurance required in New Jersey?
New Jersey does not require boat insurance by state law. However, many marinas and yacht clubs require proof of liability coverage as a condition of dockage, and some lenders require it if you financed the boat. Even where it's not required, going without it leaves you personally liable for any injuries or damage you cause on the water.
Does my homeowners insurance cover my boat?
Most standard homeowners policies cover small boats (typically under 26 feet and with limited horsepower) for theft only — and usually with a low sublimit of $1,000–$1,500. They provide no liability coverage for on-water accidents. Larger boats and personal watercraft are typically excluded entirely. A standalone boat insurance policy is the right solution for most NJ boaters.
How much does boat insurance cost in New Jersey?
Annual premiums typically run $150–$600 for smaller powerboats, runabouts, and personal watercraft, and $400–$2,000+ for larger center consoles, cruisers, and sailboats. Your specific rate depends on the vessel's value, length, how and where it's stored, your boating experience, and the coverage limits you choose. We can give you an accurate quote in a few minutes.
What's the difference between agreed value and actual cash value?
With actual cash value (ACV) coverage, your payout in the event of a total loss is the current market value of the boat — which depreciates each year. With agreed value coverage, you and the insurer establish the boat's insured value upfront, and you receive that full amount if the boat is a total loss, regardless of depreciation. Agreed value coverage costs more but is strongly recommended for newer boats, restored classics, and vessels with significant upgrades.
Do I need separate insurance for my jet ski or personal watercraft?
Yes — personal watercraft (Jet Ski, Sea-Doo, WaveRunner) are typically excluded from homeowners policies and require their own policy. Standalone PWC insurance covers liability, physical damage, and medical payments in a policy specifically designed for high-speed, high-risk use. Premiums are usually $300–$500 per year.
Does boat insurance cover me when I'm out of state?
Most policies can be written with a navigation territory that includes nearby coastal states. If you regularly trailer your boat to Delaware, Maryland, or New York, or plan to cruise up the Intracoastal Waterway, we'll make sure your policy's navigation territory covers where you actually go.
The Water Doesn't Care If You're Covered. We Do.
A homeowners policy won't save you when your boat is damaged in a storm, stolen from the marina, or involved in an on-water accident. Dedicated boat insurance does — and it's more affordable than most NJ boaters expect.
RFK Insurance has been covering Jersey Shore and North Jersey boaters for over 100 years. Whether you're launching from Barnegat Bay, mooring in Cape May, or trailering to Lake Hopatcong, we'll get you the right coverage before the season starts.
